John Tyler's Haitian Policy
The present situation in Haiti is not our problem. We have to concentrate on fixing the situation in America. It would be my policy to completely get our military out of Haiti and allow the Haitian government to handle the situation themselves.
As when we sent American troops and aid to Somalia it ended up costing American lives and the aid money ended up in the hands of warlords. It won't be long before American troops get caught up in the chaos and will be blamed for having to use force against rioting Haitians. There has already been an outbreak of malaria amoung our troops. Missionaries are already in Haitian jails for trying to rescue Haitian orphans. It will be the same Haitian government that has imprisoned them that will get rich off of the donations.

Update April 13, 2010
The latest news coverage in Haiti clearly shows the result of trusting in the UN to handle the problems in Haiti. The present camps that have the Haitian people living under non waterproof tarps in mudputtles is the result of herding these people into camps where they are depending completely on handouts for their survival. Haiti is a big lush country and there is plenty of fertile higher elevation land where the Haitians can construct shelters and begin farming the land to produce a sustainable agricultural foundation to feed, employ and support themselves without occupation. The solutrion of America and the UN mostly financed by the US building more highrise urban dwellings that will be like the ones built by the Clinton administration that collapsed after a relatively moderate eaarthquake is not what will solve the problems in Haiti. Voluntary groups that are willing to help can help to build them simple inexpensive structures and provide the tools that the people can use to begin to give them the ability for self sufficiency.
